Key Stage 3: Beacon Edge

At Beacon High, we are committed to ensuring that all of our students enjoy learning beyond the classroom, where they are provided with the opportunity to develop both their academic and social skills.

We recognise the value of Home Learning in encouraging independent learning skills. However, and with the influence of current educational research, we also identify how for some of our students, Home Learning can have a negative impact on wellbeing, as well as zero to little impact on academic progress (Hattie, 2019).

As a result, Home Learning for Key Stage 3 now takes on a new and exciting format linked to our current LORIC Curriculum called Beacon Edge.

Students are asked to complete a minimum of three tasks as per the LORIC foci and complete their evaluations explaining the skills acquired on the PiXL Edge website: https://theedge.pixl.org.uk/

The tasks vary from creating posters; visits to museums and creating a cookbook to share with at school.

All tasks, per term, are shared on our ‘Satchel One’ website as well on students’ individual Tutor Google Classrooms.

Key Stage 4:

At Key Stage 4, students will complete more ‘traditional’ Home Learning tasks which will support their understanding of their GCSE curriculum. This may include exam practice questions; revision on GCSE POD and completing their GCSE coursework. However, our Key Stage 4 students can also complete the Beacon Edge activities, alongside their curriculum Home Learning if they chose to.

Again, all Home Learning will be outlined and detailed on students’ Google Classroom and where possible on our ‘Satchel One’ website.

Satchel One

Satchel One, previously known as ‘Show My Homework’ is a digital platform where students, parents and carers can check their child’s Home Learning; Behaviour points and Achievements.

Students no longer need their individual login details as the site is paired with their Beacon High Gmail account. If parents would like to request a login, please email Pauline Tobierre, Assistant Headteacher, for a request which should include their child’s full name: pauline.tobierre@beaconhigh.org

This is what we have named ‘Beacon Edge’.
