Home Learning and Show My Homework

Home Learning and Show My Homework

As a result of the national lockdown in March 2020, we amended our previous Home Learning Policy in order to continue to offer a full curriculum and, where necessary, to close the learning gaps of our students due to any missed learning/curriculum time. Our aim is that all of our students, through our Chromebooks for All initiative, are able to access learning via the online platforms we use.

Our expectations for Year 8- 11 are as the following:

·         Home Learning in Core subjects (English, Maths and Science) to be set once a week.

·         Home Learning in Option subjects to be set once a fortnight.

·         The details of the Home Learning task/s including resources are to be uploaded onto ‘Show My Homework’ and Google Classroom.

All Home Learning tasks set can be found on: https://beaconhigh.satchelone.com/school/homeworks/calendar

At Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), students will complete more ‘traditional’ Home Learning tasks which will support their understanding of their GCSE curriculum. All Home Learning will be outlined and detailed on our ‘Show My Homework’ website.

To support this, we expect all of our parents/carers to download the Satchel One App which can be used across all smart phones and devices.

Year 7 Home Learning:

At Beacon High, we are committed to ensuring that all of our students enjoy learning beyond the classroom, where they are provided with the opportunity to develop both their academic and social skills.

We recognise the value of Home Learning in encouraging independent learning skills. However, and with the influence of current educational research, we also identify how for some of our students, Home Learning can have a negative impact on wellbeing, as well as zero to little impact on academic progress (Hattie, 2019).

As a result, Home Learning for Year 7 now takes on a new and exciting format linked to our current LORIC Curriculum called Beacon Edge.

At Key Stage 4, students will complete more ‘traditional’ Home Learning tasks which will support their understanding of their GCSE curriculum. However, our Key Stage 4 students can also complete the Beacon Edge activities, alongside their curriculum Home Learning if they chose to. All Home Learning will be outlined and detailed on our ‘Show My Homework’ website.

This is what we have named ‘Beacon Edge’.
